Situation
You can measure the force of friction and abrasion by using specialized testers or simple force gauges to record the resistance and material loss when two surfaces rub together. [1, 2]
...oh... ...
How to Measure Friction Force
Sled Test Method: Place a weighted metal block (sled) on top of a flat test surface. Connect the sled to a force gauge or spring scale and pull it horizontally.
Static Friction: Record the peak force required to make the stationary sled start moving.
Kinetic Friction: Record the average force needed to keep the sled sliding at a steady speed.
Coefficient of Friction (COF): Divide the measured friction force (in Newtons) by the normal force (the weight of the sled). [1, 2, 3, 4]
How to Measure Abrasion Force and Resistance
Abrasion Test Rig / Usometer: Clamp a material sample into an arm that rubs it against a cylinder, abrasive paper, or calibrated grinding wheels at a set angle or pressure. [1, 2]
Frictional Pull Force: Record the continuous force required to scrape or rub the material. A force-versus-distance graph will show peaks indicating stick-slip behavior and mean friction force. [1]
Mass Loss or Wear: Weigh the sample before and after the test to find the exact mass lost, or inspect surface scratches using an optical microscope or optical density measurement. [1, 2]
Abrasion Test Rig
In a typical abrasion test using the Abrasion Test Rig, a sample of the abrasive material is held in place in a self-tightening grip. As the test is carried out, the arm of the Texture Analyser draws the sample under and around a cylinder at 90 degrees and the force required to pull the material is recorded.
