How to Check Identity

To confirm a person is who they claim to be, use official physical or digital verification methods: [1]

  1. Government-Issued Photo ID:  Inspect valid documents such as a UK/non-UK passport, UK photocard driving licence, or biometric residence permit. Check for security features (holograms, watermarks) and confirm the photo matches the person. [1, 2, 3]

  2. Digital Identity Verification (IDVT):  Use certified online identity service providers (IDSPs) that match a live selfie/biometric scan against a scanned government ID using facial recognition and liveness checks. [1, 2, 3]

  3. Address and History Checks:  Verify supporting documentation (such as utility bills or bank statements) or use database/credit checks to confirm address history. [1, 2]

  4. Independent Contact Verification:  If verifying someone claiming to represent an organization, do not use the phone number or links they provide. Look up the company’s official public directory or website independently and call them back. [1]

  5. How to Check Credentials (Degrees, Licenses, Certifications)

To verify someone's professional qualifications, academic degrees, or job history:

  • Verifiable Digital Credentials: For modern digital certificates, look for a cryptographic digital signature or check the issuing platform (such as university portals or verified badge systems) to confirm the record is authentic and unaltered. [1]

  • Academic Institutions: Contact the registrar or admissions office of the school, college, or university directly to confirm a degree or diploma.

  • Professional Bodies and Regulators: Check public online registers for licensed professions (e.g., medical councils, law societies, or engineering boards).

  • Background Check Services: Use accredited screening or Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) channels if conducting formal employment checks. [1]

Reasons for checking identity :

- a workplace/employee onboarding

- a business transaction (KYC)

- academic/professional credentials
