Since the COVID-19 pandemic, air sterilisation by various non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) methods such as the plasma jet... [ has been "in use" at some facilities ]...

1. Energizes:

A plasma jet ionizes and energizes air gases by applying a high-voltage electric field or microwave radiation to strip electrons from gas molecules.

When a plasma jet interacts with air gases, it causes specific physical and chemical changes:

  1. Ionization:

It turns neutral air molecules (such as nitrogen, oxygen, and argon) into a conductive mix of charged particles, ions, and free electrons.

  1. Generation of Reactive Species:

Electron-neutral collisions break apart oxygen (O₂) and nitrogen (N₂) molecules, creating highly reactive chemical groups known as Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species (RONS), such as ozone (O₃), atomic oxygen, hydroxyl radicals (\bulletOH), and nitric oxide (NO).

  1. Excitation and Light Emission:

Excited gas atoms and molecules release energy in the form of ultraviolet (UV) photons and visible light as they return to a lower energy state (seen as a glowing plasma plume or "plasma bullet").

  1. Thermal Expansion or Non-Thermal Flow:

• In cold atmospheric plasma jets, the electrons stay high-energy while the bulk air gas remains near room temperature, allowing it to treat sensitive surfaces or biological tissue safely.

• In thermal or propulsion plasma jets, superheating expands the ionized air violently to generate high-velocity thrust without burning chemical fuel.

Oxygen accounts for approximately 24% to 25% of all individual atoms (atomic percentage) in the human body, or about 61% to 65% of the body's total mass. [1, 2, 3]

The difference depends on whether you measure by element count or by weight:

  • By Atom Count (Atomic Percentage):

Oxygen makes up roughly 24% of the total number of atoms. (For comparison, hydrogen is the most abundant atom by count at ~62% due to water molecules (H2O), and carbon makes up about 12%).

  • By Mass (Weight Percentage):

Oxygen makes up roughly 61% to 65% of the human body's total weight, largely because oxygen atoms are much heavier than hydrogen and carbon atoms, and water (H2O) makes up over half of body mass. [1, 2, 3, 4]
