CALMING A BESERK PERSON
CALMING A BESERK PERSON

Situation

To calm and de-escalate an angry person safely, manage your own reaction and lower the emotional temperature of the room using proven techniques.

Immediate De-Escalation Steps

  • Stay calm yourself: Keep your voice slow, quiet, and steady. Avoid matching their volume, yelling, or showing defensiveness.

  • Give physical space: Increase physical distance by a few feet and angle your body slightly away instead of facing them directly, which reduces a sense of confrontation.

  • Soften eye contact: Avoid intense or fixed direct eye contact, which can feel threatening; look slightly downward or away.

  • Allow them to vent: Let the person speak for a short period without interruption so they can release initial energy.

  • Validate the emotion: Acknowledge what they are feeling or repeat back the core of what they said to show you are listening (such as, "I can see you're really upset about this").

What to Avoid

  • Never say "Calm down": Telling someone to calm down or relax almost always triggers a defensive or agitated reaction.

  • Do not use "You" accusations: Avoid blaming statements like "You always ruin everything". Switch to "I" statements if you need to express impact (e.g., "I feel overwhelmed when voices are raised" ).

  • Avoid arguing or reasoning immediately: Rational debate does not work when someone is flooded by the brain's fight-or-flight response. Wait until emotions drop before trying to solve the problem.

  • Don't crowd them: Intruding into their personal space escalates tension and compromises your safety.

Next Steps and Safety

  • Propose a pause:

Once the initial surge passes, suggest stepping back:

"Let's take a 30-minute break and revisit this".

  • Prioritize safety:

If the person is violent, heavily under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or making threats, step away immediately and contact local emergency services or support organizations. For guidance in the UK, you can consult support resources like Mind or local helplines.

- assess what person is angry (e.g., a coworker, child, partner, or stranger) ...

- what triggered it...

- then use specific communication scripts...

...like what...?...

  1. “I can see how upset you are.” (Acknowledges their emotion without arguing whether they are right or wrong)

  2. “Help me understand.” (Invites them to explain rather than triggering a defensive response)

  3. “Please speak more slowly; I’d like to help.” (Breaks the high-arousal pattern and signals genuine attention)

  4. “What would you like me to do?” (Shifts their brain from emotional fighting to logical problem-solving)

  5. “I hear you, and I’m not willing to be yelled at. Let’s talk when we’re both calmer.” (Sets a firm, calm boundary)
