Exercise : Stopping Rogue Insiders
Situation
Stopping a rogue insider (an employee, contractor, or compromised
account actively misusing internal access) requires:
- immediate technical containment
- legal review - access revocation
Immediate Technical Steps
Revoke credentials and access:
Immediately disable Active Directory accounts, SSO tokens, VPN
certificates, and API keys.
Isolate devices:
Disconnect affected laptops or workstations from the corporate
network without shutting them down completely, allowing forensics
teams to capture live memory and logs.
Enforce Zero Trust and PAM:
Use Privileged Access Management (PAM) and session-termination
tools (such as network-level controls like SSHepherd) to cut off
unauthorized lateral movement.
Deploy deception tech:
Utilize:
- honeytokens - canary traps to detect and divert malicious actions early.
"...deploy realistic decoy credentials across your internal and external infrastructure. When attackers find and use them, you'll know immediately."

Governance and Legal Action
Engage legal counsel:
Involve in-house or external legal advisors immediately to protect
findings under attorney-client privilege and prepare for potential
data recovery or police reporting.
Preserve evidence:
Freeze audit logs, SIEM data, email archives, and CCTV footage
before initiating formal disciplinary or termination procedures.
Assess regulatory reporting:
Determine if the breach requires notification to data protection
authorities (such as the ICO in the UK) or affected customers
under applicable data laws.
Dealing with an active incident:
• What type of system or data is being accessed
• Is the person still actively logged in or network-connected
