Situation
1. Containing the Odour and Spreading
Cover the area: If the spill is on bare ground and blowing in the wind, a temporary fix is to cover the affected soil with lime powder or a heavy layer of topsoil to trap the smell and moisture.
Ventilate your home:
If the wind is blowing odours into your home or if gases are escaping from your pipes, leave windows open to allow fresh air to circulate, but keep doors to unaffected rooms closed.Cleanup
3. Decontaminate properly: If you must wash hard outdoor surfaces (like concrete paths), use a heavy-duty disinfectant and wash it away safely.
Disinfection should remove all traces of bacteria within 24 to 48 hours.
To clean up a sewage spill safely, you only need basic household items: liquid household bleach to disinfect surfaces, and standard dish soap for cleaning. Stronger industrial chemicals are generally not safe or necessary for indoor use.Warning: Never mix ammonia with bleach. Combining these creates a highly toxic, deadly gas.
i. Hard Surfaces
For concrete, paving, tile, or other hard floors:
Soap wash: Scrub the area with hot water and a mild dish detergent.
Disinfect: Rinse with a solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented liquid household bleach per 1 gallon of water.
Dry: Let the area air dry completely.
ii. Porous Materials
Sewage contains harmful bacteria and viruses. Porous items cannot be fully sanitized and must be removed and thrown away.
Discard carpet, carpet padding, and heavily soaked mattresses.
Bag all solid waste (like toilet paper and feces) and place it in the trash.
iii. Clothing
Wash contaminated clothes and towels in hot water.Use laundry detergent and add chlorine bleach (if the fabric allows it) to disinfect them properly.Always wash these items separately from your normal laundry.
iv. Soil and Grass
Leave contaminated soil, sand, or lawns alone.The harmful bacteria will die naturally within a few days when exposed to the sun's UV rays.Keep children and pets away from the outdoor spill area for at least 20 days, or until the grass is completely dry.
v. Essential Safety Gear
You must protect yourself before touching any sewage spill. Always wear:Rubber gloves and rubber boots.Eye protection or safety goggles.A face mask to avoid breathing in contaminated mist or odors.
4. Basic hygiene precautions should include:
keeping children and pets out of the contaminated area.
decontaminating footwear by washing and treating with a mild disinfectant

5. Bacteria should, typically, reduce to background levels during the following periods:
Warm, dry summer conditions: 9 days
Damper, cooler, spring/autumnal conditions: 12 days for spills onto turf and heavy (clay) soils; and 26 days for spills onto loose soil and sand
Wet, cold winter conditions: 25 days.
