Exercise: Clear Lungs of Starch Dust
![]() | ![]() |
Particle Size Breakdown of Starch Dust
The classification depends on the state of the starch:
Intact Natural Starches (PM10 & Coarse Dust):
Plant Decomposition: As starch-rich vegetation and organic matter decompose on the ground, microscopic granules become airborne and cycle through the wind, creating what researchers call "starch rain".
It is this respirable PM2.5 portion that triggers lower airway inflammation and poses an industrial explosion hazard...

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation directly and indirectly drives plant litter decomposition by altering physical structures, chemical compounds, and microbial communities. [1, 2]
Direct Effects (Photodegradation)
Photochemical Mineralization: UV rays directly break down organic carbon in plant litter into gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) without needing microbes.
Lignin Fragmentation: Photosensitive structural compounds like lignin absorb UV radiation. This splits complex molecules into smaller organic fragments.
Photofacilitation: Breaking down tough, recalcitrant chemical bonds makes the remaining material easier for soil organisms to digest later. [1]
Indirect Effects (Growth and Chemistry Changes)
Secondary Metabolites: Plants exposed to high UV-B during their growth phase adapt by accumulating protective chemicals like flavonoids and sinapate esters.
Litter Quality Shifts: These protective chemical changes alter the initial tissue chemistry of the plant, which can either speed up or slow down how fast the dead material decays in the soil.
Decomposer Inhibition: High UV exposure can suppress microbial and fungal activity on the soil surface, reducing decomposition rates in certain dry or exposed ecosystems. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Plant litter production (litterfall) peaks at different times of the year depending strongly on the regional climate and forest type. [1]
Seasonal Patterns by Climate Type
Temperate and Boreal Forests
Autumn (September–November): This period sees the largest peak in litterfall as deciduous trees drop their leaves ahead of winter.
Spring/Summer: Minor secondary drops occur due to twig shedding, floral debris, or summer storms, but autumn dominates the annual cycle. [1]

Methods to Clear Lungs of Dust
Your lungs naturally clean themselves using mucus
and tiny hairs called cilia, which trap dust and
push it out through coughing or swallowing.
Natural Ways to Help Clear Your Lungs
1. Stay hydrated:
Drink plenty of water and warm fluids to thin
out mucus, making it easier to cough up trapped
dust.
2. Steam Therapy / Saline Rinse:
Inhale water vapor from a hot shower or a bowl
of warm water to open airways and loosen
congestion.
Use a saline nasal spray or rinse to
flush starch particles out of your nasal
the airways, and clears irritants.
3. Practice Controlled Coughing:
Take a slow breath, hold it for a few seconds,
and do a few short, sharp coughs to clear your
airways.
Exercise regularly:
Do aerobic activities like walking, jogging, or cycling
to breathe more deeply and help your lungs expand
and clear themselves.
Avoid further exposure:
Stay away from smoke, heavy pollution, and dusty areas,
and use a HEPA vacuum cleaner or air purifier at home.
