Situation


Working in low-oxygen environments or managing tasks with low blood oxygen requires strict safety rules or energy-saving steps depending on the context.


Safety in Industrial Low-Oxygen Workplaces


Normal air has about 21% oxygen, and levels below 19.5% are deficient. [1]

  • Test the air:

    Always measure oxygen levels before entering confined spaces.


  • Use breathing gear: Wear supplied-air respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus if ventilation fails.


  • Have a rescue team: Keep trained rescue cover and emergency alarms nearby. [1, 2]



Managing Daily Tasks with Low Blood Oxygen (Health)


If you have low oxygen saturation due to a lung condition, pace your daily chores:


  • Break tasks apart:


    Rest between steps when walking, climbing stairs, or bathing.


  • Use tools:


    Sit down while grooming or use a cart when shopping.


  • Practice breathing:


    Use pursed-lip breathing to keep air passages open during effort. [1, 2]


Preventing oxygen deprivation begins with a thorough health and safety risk assessment to identify potential hazards.


Control Measures


Employers must then implement effective control measures to keep employees safe.


These may include:


  1. Atmospheric testing and monitoring


    – using gas detectors to check oxygen levels before and during entry. Learn about minimum and maximum gas levels in confined spaces.


  2. Ventilation systems


    Ensuring fresh air circulation to prevent the build-up of harmful gases.


  3. Breathing apparatus (BA)


    Providing appropriate equipment for workers where oxygen levels cannot be guaranteed as safe. See our BA User Course.


  4. Permit-to-work systems


    Ensuring only authorised and trained personnel enter confined spaces.


  5. Emergency procedures


    Having a competent rescue plan in place in case of an incident. Find out why confined space rescue should only ever be staged by trained personnel.
