Chemical Components
Wallpaper paste is mainly made from modified starches, cellulose ethers, or clay mixed with water and small amounts of preservatives. [1, 2]
Main Adhesive Bases
Modified Starches: Wheat or corn starch provides smooth spreading and traditional sticking power.
Cellulose Ethers: Methylcellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) dissolves easily in water, swells quickly, and allows the paper to slide for easy alignment.
Clay: Used in heavy-duty or premixed vinyl pastes (often mixed with dextrin) for high tack and strength on heavy materials. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Polymers and Resins (For Extra Strength)
Additives and Preservatives
Fungicides / Biocides: Chemicals like didecyldimethylammonium chloride or other preservatives stop mould and mildew from growing in the paste while it dries.
Polyhydric Alcohols: Glycerin or glycols are sometimes added to control drying time and improve flow.
Salts/Minerals: Sodium chloride or bentonite clay are used as fillers or consistency modifiers. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
