Tragically, history shows that everyday people and local authority
figures are often the ones manipulated into turning on their
neighbors and friends.
The most prominent historical genocides and acts of mass violence
include:
The Holocaust (1939–1945):
Nazi Germany's state-sponsored murder of approximately six million
European Jews, as well as millions of others including Roma,
disabled individuals, and political dissenters.
Rwandan Genocide (1994):
In just 100 days, extremist militias and ordinary citizens
systematically killed over one million people, primarily the Tutsi
minority, though it also included Hutus who opposed the violence.
Cambodian Genocide (1975–1979):
The Khmer Rouge regime's radical social engineering led to the
deaths of up to three million people, roughly a quarter of the
population.
Bosnian Genocide (1992–1995):
Systematic ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities committed against
Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) by Serbian forces during the breakup of
Yugoslavia.
Indigenous Genocides:
Mass violence and forced cultural erasure spanning centuries,
resulting in devastating population losses among Native American
communities in the Americas.
In recent years, the term genocide has been highly debated in the
context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Numerous human rights organizations, United Nations independent
commissions of inquiry, and international scholars have formally
accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians.
These accusations cite mass civilian casualties, the weaponization
of aid, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
Conversely, Israel, its allies, and some genocide scholars fiercely
reject these allegations, stating their military actions are directed
at the US-designated terrorist group Hamas and are required for
national survival following the October 7, 2023 attacks.
