Dine, Katibat Macina, and Al-Mourabitoun), JNIM operates extensively
in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and increasingly pushes into coastal
West African states.
Islamic State Sahel Province (IS Sahel): Operating primarily in the
Liptako-Gourma borderlands (the tri-border area of Mali, Burkina Faso,
and Niger), this IS affiliate is fiercely rivaled with JNIM.
Coalition of Azawad Movements (CMA):
Primarily consisting of Tuareg separatists, this coalition battles for
autonomy in northern Mali.
Pro-Government and Self-Defense Militias: Various localized and
state-armed militias operate across the region, including the
Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) in Burkina Faso
and Dan Na Ambassagou in central Mali.
Political instability, including a series of military coups, led
Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to form the Alliance of Sahel States
(AES) and expel Western security forces in favor of Russian military
support.
The borderlands between these three nations currently account for
over half of all global terrorism-related deaths..."
