Exercise: Optimal Field Patrol Formation
Situation
Patrol formations include the wedge, file (or column), and line.
The choice depends on the ground type, visibility, and how fast
you need to react to danger.

1. Wedge (or Arrowhead):
Shaped like a "V" with a lead element and teams on the flanks.
Good for open or semi-open terrain.
Offers great firepower to the front and sides.
2. File (or Column) :
People walk in a single or staggered line one behind the other.
Best for thick woods, narrow paths, or night movement.
Easy to control, but weak in forward firepower if attacked from the front.
3. Line:
Everyone walks side-by-side in a single row.
Used during an assault or when crossing a final zone.
Delivers maximum forward fire power, but hard to control.
4. Staggered Column
How it works: Two parallel lines of patrollers move forward offset
from each other.
Pros: Cuts clear paths, offers good side protection, and keeps team
members close enough to see each other.
Cons: Harder to watch the direct front and back without shifting
people.
5. Single File Column
How it works: Everyone walks in one single
line.
Pros: Easiest to control in very thick jungle or dark woods; leaves
only one trail.
Cons: Weak front and rear defense if attacked.
Key Rules for Forest Movement
Close the gap: Reduce the space between team members to match
visibility (often just 3 to 5 meters) so no one gets lost.
Adapt to changes: Switch to a wider wedge shape if you hit an open
clearing or wide trail.

CLOCK LOCATING METHOD
Superimpose a clock face, either vertically or horizontally on an
object or on an area, to indicate the position of something.
… with the front of vehicle 12 o'clock and the rear as 6 o'clock.
Call out the positions of anything noteworthy using the hour as vector.
Using the clock method will draw their eyes on to it quickly.
