# try to avoid things that can make tinnitus worse,

- such as stress or loud

# Background noises join a support group

– talking to other people with tinnitus may help you cope

# Don’t do not have total silence

– listening to soft music or sounds (sound therapy) may

distract you from the tinnitus

# Do not focus on it, as this can make it worse – hobbies

and activities may take your mind off it

Dry, low-humidity conditions can severely aggravate tinnitus.

Arid environments or heated indoor air strip moisture from your sinus cavities

and ears.

This can cause fluid imbalances in the inner ear, harden earwax, and lead to

dehydration, which thickens your blood and restricts vital circulation to the

auditory system.

How Dry Conditions Impact Your Ears

1. Dehydration:

Reduced humidity pulls moisture from your body, impairing blood flow to

delicate inner ear structures and the cochlea.

2. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction:

Dry air thickens mucus, leading to sinus congestion that makes your ears

feel "clogged" or full, increasing the prominence of the ringing.

3. Earwax Buildup:

Extreme dryness causes earwax to harden, creating blockages

that trap sound and amplify your perception of tinnitus.

Relief Strategies

If you're dealing with a flare-up, try these actionable steps to restore

balance:

4. Hydrate:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep blood viscosity

healthy and reduce the phantom sounds.

5. Use a Humidifier:

Add moisture to your environment—especially in your

bedroom or workspace—to keep your nasal passages and ear canals from drying

out.

6. Nasal Saline Rinses:

Use a saline spray to moisten your nasal passages and

ease Eustachian tube pressure.

7. Protect Your Ears:

In cold, windy, or extremely dry weather, wear earmuffs

or a warm hat outdoors.

8. Mask the Noise:

Use white noise machines, a fan, or soft background music

in quiet environments to distract your brain from the ringing

...put a sock in it...

...then do...

...owhh…

...tuhh-huhh…!..

...owwh...!...

...mmm.../...hmmm...

...

...owhh...!!...

Not all strategies are appropriate for all patients, so patients and audiologists

work together to create an individualized intervention plan, which could include:

Hearing aids

Earwax removal

Treating a circulatory condition

Masking devices or white noise machines

Relaxation therapies

Medication adjustments

Diet and lifestyle adjustments
